Almost There

Fog hangs over the refugee camp,
Snow will be coming soon
She shares a tent with three other women
And the wind sings a keening tune

She came here across the desert
From somewhere further east
She left her home when it was destroyed
By the jets of Assad the beast

She has a sea to cross and a continent more
She needs to get past borders of wire
But she won’t stop trying, for her son and herself
She's almost there, almost there, almost there

He’s six years old, he’s known nothing but war
She wants to give him a different life
A place to grow up, go to school and enjoy
A childhood free from this strife

She lines up for water, for food and for fuel
But nowhere can she line up to get out
An exit visa is an impossible goal
So she’ll pay the smugglers and head south

She has a sea to cross and a continent more
She needs to get past borders of wire
But she won’t stop trying, for her son and herself
She's almost there, almost there, almost there

She came from Iraq, she's been in Syria too
Ended up here in Jordan with a million more
It could be worse, she could be dead
But for now she's just spoils of war

There is a home for her somewhere in this world
She will keep her hopes up, she will keep going on
She will not be stateless and homeless forever
She will look beyond the far horizon

She has a sea to cross and a continent more
She needs to get past borders of wire
But she won’t stop trying, for her son and herself
She's almost there, almost there, almost thererself
You’re almost there, almost there, almost there
